IN SPIRIT OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., OCA-NY CALLS FOR MEETING WITH STEVE HARVEY SHOW PRODUCERS TO DEMAND AN APOLOGY FOR RACIST JOKES ABOUT ASIAN MEN
The Asian American community reveres Martin Luther King, Jr. as a civil rights leader for all. On his birthday, January 16, 2017, OCA-NY, artists, educators, and youth groups, call for a meeting with Steve Harvey Show producers to demand an apology for racist jokes about Asian men being unattractive to white and African American women. (See attached letter).
These racist statements not only are revolting, but lead to job discrimination for Asian American men in fields where perceived sex appeal is important, specifically industries like acting, fashion, broadcast media, entertainment, and the like. And like African Americans, Asian Americans have been victims of hate crimes stemming from demeaning stereotypes.
"Martin Luther King, Jr. had the 'strength to love' those who said and did things that hurt others. We want to meet to not only demand an apology, but to educate the producers on the history of job discrimination against Asian American men that continues today and hate crimes stemming from racist stereotypes," stated Chi Loek, President of OCA-NY Asian Pacific American Advocates.
OCA-NY Asian Pacific American Advocates-New York Chapter is part of OCA, a national civil rights organization that promotes the political, cultural, and social rights of Asian Pacific Americans. The OCA-NY chapter is one of 100 chapters and affiliates of OCA across the country.
