OCA-NY Condemns the Mocking of Chinese Americans by Jesse Watters of Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor Show
OCA-NY strongly condemns Fox News’ Jesse Watters over a “Watters’ World” segment held in NYC Chinatownwhich was shown on 03 October 2016.The episode is grossly offensive and demeaning to Chinese Americans. Mr. Watters makes a mockery of every hard working individual who is trying to better our society. In the episode, Jesse Watters made fun of Chinese Americans he encountered on the streets with inane racist stereotypes. It was clear that Mr. Watters obnoxiously egged the innocent people on the streets to perpetuate the Asian stereotype. This blatantly racist stereotyping of Chinese Americans, or any ethnic American, has no place in American life today.
In this major political election year where immigrants have been made to feel like outsiders with vile, racist rhetoric, worthy news programs should not engage in this type of race baiting to enhance its viewership. This episode shows that Fox News has a long way to go in reporting on ethnic communities in a respectful and fair manner. Furthermore, Fox News missed a real opportunity to examine the Asian American vote that may impact this upcoming election. Today, Asian Americans comprise 15 million of the U.S. population and is the fastest growing ethnic group in the country. In the most recent census, Asian Americans grew by 45%, compared to 10% of the overall general population. OCA-NY has been an active participant in civic engagement by convening candidates’ forums, voter registration drives and phone-bankingto increase civic engagement in New York’s Asian Pacific American community.
Given the divisive and derogatory comments aired, we are demanding an apology from Jesse Watters, Bill O’Reilly, and Fox News. Furthermore, we are requesting a meeting with Fox News’ executives to discuss cultural sensitivity training for Fox News personnel and how this type of news reporting will never be aired again. We deserve much better treatment than what’s shown by Fox News.
