OCA-NEW YORK ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN ADVOCATES will proudly join thousands at the rally in Union Square today, Friday, November 21st at 5:00 p.m. to support President Obama' s use of executive action to keep immigrant families together.
President Obama announced yesterday he will use executive action to extend deferred action to undocumented parents of U.S. born and lawful permanent resident children. Deferred action is a temporary two year period in which the immigrant is allowed to live and work in the U.S. without fear of being deported. This status is renewable every two years.
" Congress needs to see and hear that there is overwhelming public support for the President's actions. Deferred action for parents will not only keep families intact, but will allow the parents to legally work to provide for their family. This will help boost America's economy and make communities stronger," stated Elizabeth R. OuYang, President of OCA-NY.
However, the President's actions serve as a temporary stop to the deportation of parents of U.S. born and lawful permanent residents. It is still up to Congress to provide a permanent solution-a pathway to citizenship for the 12 million undocumented immigrants living and contributing to society.
Founded in 1978, OCA-NY Asian Pacific American Advocates is a non-profit, volunteer civil rights organization that promotes and protects the civil rights of Asian Pacific Americans in the five boroughs of New York City.
