2011 OCA-NY 5th Annual Hate Crimes Prevention Art Project: “Do You K(no)w Me?” $1500 in prize money. Get your artwork featured in a museum. Stop hate and hate crimes through art. The Hate Crimes Prevention Art Project is a city-wide art contest for New York City high school students to combat hate crimes. OCA-NY is leading this project in partnership with Chinatown Youth Initiatives (CYI), South Asian Youth Action! (SAYA!), the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center (The Center), and Teens for Racial and Ethnic Awakening (TREA). After a summer of training on hate crimes and art as advocacy, 12 high school interns selected by OCA-NY’s partner organizations will be the sole judges of all art submissions. The theme for the 5th Hate Crimes Prevention Art Project is, “Do You K(no)w Me?” Too often, perpetrators refuse to know the victims as individual people, and instead, commit violent acts based on their hatred towards a person’s race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, age and/or disability. This year, our interns encourage New York City youth to move away from saying “no” to “knowing” and to expand their worlds through art and help us understand one another as complex selves. Attend this event on Facebook and share the link with all your friends!
All artwork will be due by 12:00PM Noon on July 29th, in one of the designated drop-off sites. There will be an opening ceremony for the Hate Crimes Prevention Project art exhibition on Monday, August 1st, from 6-9 PM at the Museum of Chinese in Americas (MoCA) at 215 Centre Street in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Winners will be announced at the opening. To be eligible for the contest, you must be present for the exhibition opening. Stay tuned for updates on special guests attending the exhibition opening.

Family Members will speak and read excerpts from letters he sent his family from army training.
There will also be a brief power point presentation on redistricting. 2010 Census shows Asian American population in New York City is close to a million. These numbers make it possible for more state and assembly districts to be drawn containing large APA communities with shared interests.

Dear OCA-NY members and supporters:
On behalf of the Board of OCA-NY, it is our pleasure to invite you to OCA-NY’s 36th Anniversary Community Service and Leadership Awards Gala, to be held at Grand Harmony Restaurant, 98 Mott Street, Manhattan Chinatown on Friday, September 28th. The Gala will attract hundreds to celebrate OCA-NY’s achievements as a premier volunteer-based civil rights organization. Please click here for information on sponsorships, placing an ad in the journal, and buying tickets. This past year, highlights of our achievement include:
- OCA-NY’s widely publicized campaign for justice for Private Danny Chen, a 19 year old Chinese American soldier found dead in Afghanistan after being physically and emotionally mistreated by his fellow superiors, including being subjected to racial taunting and humiliation. Our campaign for a transparent investigation has led to 8 superiors being charged and to the Army’s decision to hold the trials in the U.S. We will be monitoring the trials in Fort Bragg, North Carolina this summer and fall.
- OCA-NY became a founding member of ACCORD, a coalition of Asian American organizations for redistricting and democracy. Reflecting the growth of Asian Americans in the 2010 Census, our collective efforts led to the creation of the first majority Asian American U.S. Senate District and two additional Asian American Assembly Districts in New York. OCA-NY also assisted over 125 people at its citizenship trainings in Flushing and Elmhurst.
- OCA-NY’s Hate Crimes Prevention Art Project is now embarking on its 6th successful year. This year, we are partnering with Chinatown Youth Initiatives, Good Old Lower East Side, New York State Youth Leadership Council, and Sadie Nash Leadership Project.
- OCA-NY was the host city for the 2011 OCA National Convention that attracted more than 700 attendees from eighty chapters and affiliates across the country. OCA-NY received the Chapter of the Year First Place Award, along with the award for advocacy, community development, and economic development.
We will also be recognizing the significant achievements and contributions of individuals and organizations that reflect OCA-NY’s vision of leadership and service to our community and to society. This year’s honorees include:
Retired General Antonio Taguba, the 2nd naturalized Filipino American to be promoted to General in the Army and author of the infamous report on abuse of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.
The New York Community Trust, the oldest and largest private foundation in the country.
Jacky Tik Wong, reporter, Singtao newspaper, the first to break the news of Pvt. Danny Chen’s case in the Chinese media.
Jennifer Gonnerman, Contributing Editor, The New York Magazine.
Please join us on Friday, September 28th to celebrate our accomplishments as a community and as OCA-NY continues to play a vital role in the political, economic, and cultural fabric of our city and the nation.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth OuYang

OCA-NY cordially invites you to a
Pan Asian Repertory Theatre production of
MONSTER
Written by Derek Nguyen Directed by Kaipo Schwab
Inspired by a true story, MONSTER takes place in a California desert suburb where Vietnamese-American detective Tang Tran investigates the disappearance of a high school student following a brutal hate crime. MONSTER is a noir-esque production that uses multi-media to create an atmosphere where perspective manipulates objectivity and guilt fuses with innocence, revealing that Monsters don't only live underneath our beds—they also live within us.

Screening: Vincent Who?
followed by Q&A with writer/producer Curtis Chin
Friday, March 18, 6:30pm
Museum of Chinese in America,
215 Centre Street, NYC
MOCA and OCA-New York Chapter present a special screening of Vincent Who?, a documentary that explores the legacy of Vincent Chin.
In 1982, at the height of anti-Japanese sentiments, Vincent Chin was murdered in Detroit by two whiteautoworkers who said, "it's because of you mother** that we're out of work." When the judged fined the killers a mere $3,000 and three years of probation, Asian Americans around the country galvanized to form a real community and movement. This documentary, inspired by a series of townhalls organized by Asian PacificAmericans for Progress on the 25th Anniversary of the case, features interviews with key players at the time, as well as a whole new generation of activists. "Vincent Who?" asks how far Asian Americans have come since then and how far we have yet to go.
Featured interviews include: Helen Zia (lead activist during the Chin trial), Renee Tajima Pena ("Who Killed Vincent Chin?"), Stewart Kwoh (Executive Director, Asian Pacific American Legal Center), Lisa Ling(journalist), Sumi Pendakur (Univ. of Southern California), Dale Minami (civic rights attorney), Frank Wu (former Dean, Wayne State Law School), Doua Thor (Executive Director, Southeast Asian Resource Action Center) and a group of five diverse young APA activists whose lives were impacted by Vincent Chin.
Followed by post-screening discussion with filmmaker Curtis Chin.
Admission: FREE for OCA-NY members, MOCA members, teachers and students (with valid ID). ; Others must pay$10/adult; $8/senior. RSVP required to

OCA-NY DRAGONS WILL DEFEND ITS WINNING REGULAR MIXED II TITLE
20th ANNUAL HONG KONG DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL in NEW YORK
On August 7-8th, OCA-NY will race again in the 20th Annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in Flushing, Meadows, New York. OCA-NY is one of 80 chapters across the country dedicated to promoting and advancing the rights of Asian Americans. Last year, OCA-NY Dragons took the championship crown in the regular mixed division. This year, sponsored by Kraft Foods, OCA-NY will have two mixed teams, “OCA-NY Dragons ” and “OCA-NY Krafty Dragons ” competing to defend its winning title.
“The Dragon Boat Races is an event that celebrates a cultural tradition, promotes good health, and fosters team work. OCA-NY is proud to be participating again in this great unifying sport,” stated Elizabeth OuYang, President, OCA-NY. OCA-NY started participating in the annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festivals in New York in 1996. Its team members are residents from Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Long Island, Westchester, New Jersey and Connecticut.
“What makes OCA-NY unique is that our team of 34 paddlers, drummers, steerers and managers ranges in ages and gender from 17 years old to 50 plus years old. Composed of first and second generation Asian Americans, our team reflects OCA-NY’s diverse membership from various professionals in finance to education, students, doctors and dentists. In addition to racing, we share a common vision to celebrate our cultural heritage,” stated Chi Loek, Captain of OCA-NY dragon boat teams. OCA-NY team members are residents from Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and New Jersey and represent a rainbow of Asian ethnicities: Burmese, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
This weekend, OCA-NY teams will compete in five races: the 250 and 500 meter races in the regular mixed team division, the woman’s Invitational, the non-profit race and the sponsor’s challenge. OCA-NY will also have a tent and an informational booth at the festival.
The OCA-NY Dragons have two teams this year and hope to defend their 2009 title in their division!

OK, that really was the quick (and honest) version, but if you have another minute, I’ll tell you a little more. There are 2.5 million breast cancer survivors who celebrated another birthday last year because people like you signed up to walk with people like us. There are a lot of breast cancer events out there, but we are walking with the American Cancer Society because we like that the money and awareness we raise help people stay well and get well from breast cancer. It also helps find cures and empowers people to fight back. Last year Making Strides brought together 700,000 people who raised $60 million.
And because those funds were available, more people in our community will ...
-
Have the information and tools they need to stay well from breast cancer or find the disease early when it’s easiest to treat
-
Have a place to turn for help 24/7 if they are faced with breast cancer
-
Benefit from the progress being made toward finding breast cancer’s causes and cures.
-
Get access to lifesaving mammograms and treatment
That $60 million literally came in one walker and one donation at a time, so please email me to join the OCA-NY Team!
Thanks so much, looking forward to walk with YOU!
