For nearly two decades, OCA-NY, in collaboration with local youth organizations, has organized an annual Hate Crimes Prevention Project (HCPP), held every summer in New York City. HCPP is a multicultural project that seeks to spread an awareness of hate crimes prevention, promote cross cultural awareness, engage high school students in hate crimes prevention, and use art as an activism tool by recruiting student interns to coordinate, develop, and host an annual art competition for their peers across the city. With the supervision and guidance from project coordinators, the program’s high school interns collaborate to plan and host the citywide Hate Crimes Prevention Art Contest and the culminating Hate Crimes Prevention Exhibit, during which all the art submissions are displayed and the winners are announced.
Announcing our 18th Annual Hate Crimes Prevention Contest!
Submissions due by Monday, August 5th at noon. Locations in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. Please see flyer and contest application below. Art exhibit scheduled for second week of August at 127 Walker Street, Manhattan.
[CLOSED] Internship Listing: Hate Crimes Prevention Art Project College Coordinator (Summer 2024)
2024 PAID SUMMER INTERNSHIP
OCA-NY is looking for a college student or recent college graduate for a full-time summer internship position to coordinate OCA-NY's 18th Annual Hate Crimes Prevention Art Project. Statistics from the FBI, New York Police Department, and community watch groups all show that xenophobic hatred against marginalized groups are on the rise. This spike in hate crimes, locally and nationally, is against a backdrop of a resurgence of anti-Asian hate spurred by Covid-19, an anti-immigrant climate, and fear fueled by elected politicians, organized hate groups, and individuals toward marginalized communities-racial and ethnic minorities including immigrants, Jews, Muslims, and LGBTQ+ individuals. More than ever, this Project is needed.
This Project involves coordinating training of diverse teenagers from select youth organizations on hate crimes and using art as a tool to prevent hate crimes. These youth then devise the rules of a city-wide hate crimes art contest, advertise the contest, judge the submissions, and plan the opening of the Art Exhibit. The Project is an in-person training and an in-person exhibit. Coordinator would also be updating the Project’s past records.
Dates of Internship: May 15, 2024 (flexible) - August 15, 2024
Stipend: $5,400 (includes local travel expenses)
Application Deadline: Sunday, March 17, 2024, 5:00 p.m.
Please send a cover letter, current resume, short writing sample (less than 500 words), and the names and contact information of two references: one from someone who is knowledgeable about your character and leadership skills and one from a professor that has taught you within the last year. E-mail cover letter, resume, writing sample, and references to [email protected]. Indicate in the subject line: "OCA-NY Hate Crimes Project Summer 2024 Internship-then put your name."
